Apparatus
L.1. AE 1961, 332 reads L. Caecil. L.9. AE 1928, 196 expands as b(ene) d(e) s(e) meritis. Le Roux 1982: 204 reads m(erenti).
Translation
To Gaius Caecilius Quartus, veteran of the VII legion Gemina Felix, beneficiarius consularis, originating from Sicca Veneria, his wife Sempronia Fabiana (set this up) for her most gracious and outstanding husband, well deserving.
Commentary
Le Roux 1982: 204 suggests that superlatives date this to middle of C2 at the earliest, thus dating recruitment to the first half of the century. A beneficiarius was a soldier seconded for special duties to a senior officer (as a beneficium), especially beneficiarius consularis, an officer on the governor's staff.
