Translation

To Gaius Pompeius Mucro of Uxama, 90 years old, his comrades (sodales) had this made.

Commentary

Knapp 1992: 208-10 notes that while the tria nomina here is purely Roman, the decoration at the top of the stone of a horse and its rider was typically of funerary monuments from his home region. He also suggests that the sodales mentioned here (and also in 8557) were part of an association of people from Uxama at Segovia, and that the reuse of all three stones recording migrants from Uxama in the same area of wall may reflect the location of the association's burial area. Knapp dates the stone to the late first or early second century.
