Translation

Lucius Octavius Magius, son of Lucius, of the Pupinia tribe, of Baeterrae, 37 years old, 19 years service, trumpeter, soldier of the X Legion Gemina, in the century of Titus Numisius, his heir made this from his will, may the earth rest lightly upon you.

Commentary

Le Roux (1982: 122) notes that L. Octavius Magius was most likely in Asturica for admin reasons; he also places his recruitment somewhere in the Tiberian-Claudian period (Le Roux 1982: 324) and dates the inscription to the period of Claudius-Nero (Le Roux 1982: 122). As a trumpeter, he would have had a role in combat but also in regulating everyday life in the army camp, as well as accompanying detachments charged with escorting senior officials.
