Translation

'Ingenuus', an essedarius from the Gallicianus [training school], 25 years old, with 12 victories, of the people of Germania, his entire familia had this made. Here he lies, may the earth rest lightly upon you.

Commentary

Ingenuus is not a name as such, but perhaps used here to indicate a freeborn gladiator. An essedarius is one who fights from an essedum or war chariot, and this monument was probably put up by a body of essedarii ('familia universa'). For Galliciani as a gladiatorial training school, see CIL II 4.519; on this, and this epitaph more broadly, see Garcia y Bellido 1960. This inscription is mapped to Germania Superior as a representative point only.
